Student
Animator Wins Trip to SIGGRAPH
(edited press release) Twenty-one-year-old Cody Pierson of The
Art Institute of Pittsburgh was the first place prize winner in
The Art Institutes - Journey Education Marketing National Animation
Competition. He won an all-expense paid trip to the SIGGRAPH Conference
as well as a package of leading animation software.
Pierson's
winning entry featured a rhino racing across a desert, which stops
suddenly in mid charge to watch a television showing four short
vignettes that demonstrate Pierson's experiments with animation
and style. He developed the animation using 3D Studio Max from
Discreet and Adobe After Effects.
"We were
impressed with the professional look of the entries we received
as well as the imaginative, real-life quality of the subjects,"
says Mike Fischler, CEO and President of Journey. "Based
on what we've seen, the future of animation is alive and well."
Second place
prize went to Andre Romano, 25, of The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale.
Romano's two-minute animation, developed on Alias|Wavefront's
Maya and edited with Adobe After Effects, takes place in a bar
and features 10 wine glasses in pursuit of a bottle of wine attempting
to get away.
Larry Boos,
25, of The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, won third prize for
his story of "Gooboos" original
animated characters of his own design.
Each winner
receives a combination of software packages from Discreet that
include 3D Studio Max 4.0, Character Studio, Combustion and Reactor.
The Art Institutes - Journey Education Marketing Animation Competition
was open to students of The Art Institutes system of schools nationwide
and was judged by industry experts of a top employer in the field.

of the Day - Feeling the Virtual Force in LA
According
to BBC News:
"In the
virtual world you can look but not really touch, at least not
yet.
As 6,800 multimedia
experts from 75 countries gather in Los Angeles for the annual
Siggraph Convention, it is becoming clear virtual reality is becoming
chillingly real.
Imagine being
able to smell the disgusting breath of dinosaurs in a future version
of Jurassic Park and feel the ground shake as they approach..."
