GameCube
Outselling Xbox and Playstation 2
(by
digitalmediafx.com) Video game consumers are gobbling up the cheaper
priced Nintendo GameCube system over both the Xbox and Playstation
2 this holiday season. Sony's decision not to lower the price
of the Playstation 2 could be costing it thousands of consumers
as GameCube now holds the record for the highest selling first
week ever, selling over 500,000 consoles. That's 200,000 more
sales than Xbox in its first week, which was limited by Microsoft's
production schedule.
Sony easily
remains the leader in the console wars, but has taken an unusual
strategy of keeping its year old system priced higher than the
GameCube and the same price as the brand new Xbox. Sony claims
that when GameCube and Xbox run out of consoles, people will snatch
up the Playstation 2. The move is a bit odd and shows a lot of
confidence on the part of Sony.
"At a
suggested retail price of $199.95, consumers can purchase Nintendo
GameCube and two games for the same cost as rival, current generation
game consoles alone," says Peter Main, executive vice president
for sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "It's like
getting two games for free."
Nintendo claims
it will have 22 games out for the GameCube by the end of the year.

Monsters,
Inc. to Cross $200 Million Mark This Weekend
(by digitalmediafx.com) Monsters, Inc. will pass the
$200 million mark this weekend, breaking Shrek's record
for an animated movie reaching the $200 million mark the quickest.
Only four other animated movies have ever crossed the $200 million
mark. Those include Shrek, Toy Story 2, The Lion King,
and Aladdin. The Lion King is the only animated
film to make more than $300 million at the domestic box office.
As of Wednesday,
Monsters, Inc. had made $194.3 million at the box office
(track daily box office results for Monsters, Inc. here).
In day to day comparisons with Shrek, Monsters, Inc. currently
holds a greater than $10 million edge. Shrek has been gaining
a lot of ground, however, during the weekday time slots (track
the day by day comparison between the two movies here).
