Ice Age
to Have Toy Line
(by digitalmediafx.com) After initial strong reaction to its Ice
Age trailer, Fox is moving into high gear to secure licensing
and promotion deals for the animated feature that hits theaters
on March 15, 2002.
One of Fox's
first licensing deals is JAKKS Pacific's Flying Colors division,
which will create a full line of toys and merchandise for the
digitally animated feature.
Included in
the Flying Colors line will be plush toys, action figures, playsets,
activity kits, and lunch boxes.
"We're
thrilled to have leading entertainment toy licensee JAKKS Pacific
on board for Ice Age," said Peter Byrne, Executive
Vice President of Fox Licensing & Merchandising. "We
have every confidence that this film and its merchandise will
be a huge family hit."
The story
in Ice Age revolves around three characters: an acerbic
woolly mammoth named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an unsocialized
giant sloth named Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo), and a scheming
saber-toothed tiger named Diego (voiced by Denis Leary). Together,
this group of dysfunctional characters takes an unexpected passenger
on the biggest commute of all time! Along the way, they become
unlikely allies on a perilous quest to return the passenger to
its family.
The animation
is being done by Blue Sky Studios and Twentieth Century Fox. Fox
has a multi-million dollar marketing campaign in the works for
the movie.

of the Day - Venice Festival Gets Serious with Animation Cinema
According to iWon:
"The
idea that animated cinema is just for children is being overhauled
at the world's oldest film festival, where cartoons are being
taken seriously. For the first time in the long history of the
Venice Film Festival, an animation film, "Waking Life"
by American director Richard Linklater, entered the prestigious
Golden Lion competition.
Festival director
Alberto Barbera told Reuters it would not be last, as this annual
cinema showcase increasingly toys with innovative film-making
